A Creel of Irish Stories

Jane Barlow was born on the 17th October 1856 at Dollymount, Clontarf, County Dublin, Ireland.

She was the daughter of the vice-provost of Trinity College Dublin and spent much of her life in the quiet village of Raheny.

Jane is best remembered for her empathetic and realistic portrayals of the Irish peasantry. Her most celebrated work was ‘Irish Idylls’, published in 1892, which was a huge success across Europe and America.

Despite her Unionist family background, she herself held strong nationalist sympathies and often published verse anonymously to avoid family conflict.

A trailblazer for women in academia, she was the first woman to receive an honorary Doctor of Letters from Trinity College Dublin in 1904.

After the death of her father and in the later years of her own life she moved to Bray, County Wicklow. Here she continued her writings, despite patches of ill health, and became a cornerstone of the Irish literary landscape. Across her career she wrote novels, poetry and collections of short stories.

Jane Barlow died on the 17th April 1917 at Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. She was 60.
