DID you ever just have that feeling that life wasn’t going the way you expected?

That was my first thought as my finance teacher, Professor McAllister, put a graded test down on my desk that was covered with red ink.

“Not your finest work, Jake,” he said, shaking his head as he moved on.

I had a heavy feeling in the pit of my stomach as I picked it up only to stare at the large circled D at the top.

Somehow, I knew it was going to be bad. That’s what happens when the night before a big test is spent in the hospital with your sick mother so she doesn’t have to be alone. Not that I blamed her for this, but I should have guessed this would have been the outcome.

I needed a good grade so that I could pass this class, but that was starting to feel like a pipe dream. It was a feeling that I knew all too well. There wasn’t much in my life that felt like it was going right.

It was my junior year in college, and somehow I felt more confused about my future than I did when I was a freshman. I was attempting to switch majors, having decided against economics for a more practical finance degree. That meant adding another year to my schooling, which was stretching my budget about as tight as it could go.

Everything changed with my mom’s cancer diagnosis though, which turned her from a relatively fit late-forties woman into an old lady practically overnight. At least the cancer was in remission, but it had been a tough road just to get to this point.

I’d always thought that I was meant for something greater than this. Call it hubris if you want, but from a young age, I just had this idea that my life would turn out to be some kind of grand adventure, that fate or destiny had a plan for me.
