The Archduke Charles was the most formidable of Napoleon's continental foes but only once came into direct conflict with him: this was in the 1809 Franco-Austrian campaign in the Danube Valley. Smarting from Austria's humiliations in 1805, the Archduke launched a surprise attack upon the French whilst Napoleon was occupied in distant Spain. Outnumbered, the French faced disaster but, with typical energy and decisiveness, Napoleon arrived just in time. In five days of marching and fighting, he repulsed the Austrians at Abensburg and Eckmhl. The road to Vienna was now oPen & he pushed on but he underestimated his enemy, being thrown back by the Archduke Charles as he tried to cross the Danube. Failing to follow up his success, the Archduke hesitated too long and when Napoleon attempted to cross the river a second time, at the Battle of Wagram, he succeeded. F. Loraine Petre's penetrating analysis of this pivotal campaign was first published in 1909 on the centenary of the great conflict, to become one of his celebrated series of works on Napoleon's wars.

These lively memoirs date from the time of Barrs entry into the Chasseurs Velites (skirmishers, or light infantry) of Napoleons Imperial Guard in 1804. Always modest in recounting his own exploits, Barrs was not only at the cannons mouth, but also a participant at such spectacular events as the Coronation of the Emperor Napoleon in Paris and Rome, the torch light procession on the eve of Austerlitz, the meeting of the two Emperors at Tilsit, and the magnificent military display in the Champ de Mars. 

His duties involved mounting guard at Malmaison and the palace of Saint-Cloud and also allowed him many fascinating glimpses of the Emperor at reviews, presenting awards and receiving trophies. This is a superb record of a serving soldier, making light of danger, sharing with the reader the fatigues and privations that attended so much campaigning in appalling weather and hostile country, and rejoicing as much in the outcome of a successful foraging expedition as his promotions and appointment as Chevalier de la Lgion dhonneur.

This British artillery officer’s journal vividly depicts life on the frontlines in the war against Napoleon in Spain and Portugal.

 In August 1812, Second Captain Webber of the Royal Artillery joined Captain Maxwell’s 9-pounder Brigade at Zafra, Spain. His journal offers a detailed chronicle of the period up June 16th 1813, just before the Battle of Vitoria. Webber records events as they unfold, as well as his impressions of the countryside and its people and customs.

 Webber describes his experiences during the advance up to and along the Tagus to Aranjuez, the reversal of fortunes during the autumn of 1812, the difficult retreat into winter quarters in Portugal, and finally his brigade’s part in the brilliant campaign of 1813 which saw the French pushed back across the Ebro. Webber gives vivid accounts of engagements with the enemy along the way; notably around Alba de Tormes during the retreat, and on the heights outside Burgos.

 The preface by Lieutenant Colonel Laws sets the journal within the context of the Peninsular War. It also outlines Webber’s military career, which culminated with his wounding at Waterloo.

Captain William Siborne became an ensign in the 9th Foot in 1813 and was sent to France in 1815 as part of a battalion despatched to reinforce Wellingtons army. A notable topographer, after the events that year he was commissioned to create a scale model of the Battle of Waterloo, for which he carried out extensive research, writing to officers in the allied forces present to obtain information. 

The subsequent correspondence amounted to the largest single collection of primary source material on the subject ever assembled. After he had completed his model, which is today on public display in the National Army Museum in London, he used the mass of information he had gathered to produce his History of the Waterloo Campaign, which was at the time the most detailed account of the operations of 1815 and is still considered a classic work on the subject.
