Our new Intimate Geography Series explores what it means to dwell in a place, to follow its roads, to see behind its walls, to trace its landscapes, and to grasp its histories over time. In each volume, a writer will illuminate a specific place in an intimate way through their lived experiences there and through their deep knowledge of its past and present. The series will focus on interesting places--urban, rural, iconic, forgotten--and not just those sites that are heavily covered by other travel writers. Inverting the "travelogue" genre, these short books ("live-o-logues") can and will only be written by people who have lengthy lived experiences in a place and can characterize and personalize them based on their own daily relationship with it over the course of years. The first volume Cape Town: A Place Between is written by Henry Trotter, who will also serve as the series editor going forward. Currently, we are looking to start with Lagos and Johannesburg, then possibly move beyond the continent as well as continuing to illuminate interesting places on the African continent.
