Ukraine kills Russian general: How will Moscow respond?

Back in the summer, the actor and broadcaster Stephen Fry came into the Ukrainecast studio to discuss his visit to Ukraine to see how war is impacting the country's mental health.

To mark Christmas Day, he reads a short Christmas story which touches on some of the challenges Ukrainians face this winter.

Stephen Fry reads a Ukrainian Christmas story

How do you celebrate Christmas while living under constant threat of your home being bombed, air raid sirens going off and while your friends and loved ones are fighting on the frontline?

Two people who’ve appeared regularly on Ukrainecast this year got together in a Kyiv restaurant to chat through their plans for the festive season and their hopes for the new year.

Vitali, a graduate in his 20s and Iryna, mother to baby Mira (who makes a special appearance), recorded a conversation about what it's like to celebrate the festive season in Ukraine, while the war rages on.

The Ukrainian fighting North Koreans in Russia

Today, Donald Trump has been sworn in as the 47th US president. 

He promised to unleash a blitz of executive orders, after calling for a "revolution of common sense" in Monday's inaugural address.

How could Trump end the war?

The EU plans a total ban on Russian oil imports by the end of the year, among other new proposed sanctions designed to make Russia pay a high price for aggression. Victoria and Vitaly speak to the economist Timothy Ash about how reliant Europe’s energy supply is on Russia and how much longer President Putin can afford his war bill.
 
We also hear from the BBC Ukrainian Service’s Anastasia Gribanova, who’s in Lviv, where Russian missiles have hit targets in an attempt to disrupt the railway network in western Ukraine.
