Voters say the American Dream is dead. Why?

Like other Republican-led states, Missouri heeded President Trump's call to redraw congressional maps to try and create new, safe seats for Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives. Those efforts, though, are on hold due to court orders and efforts by citizens to put the maps up for a vote in a referendum this November. We explain what's going on.

Missouri's map mayhem

September 11th presented a new kind of national security threat, so a new national security architecture was built to confront it. Has it worked? Are we safer? 

This special episode from Sources & Methods, the national security podcast from NPR, host Mary Louise Kelly and former top intelligence officials discuss what happened behind closed doors on 9/11, and how the events of that day are still shaping global events. 

Those officials were Stephen Hadley, Jane Harman, John Mclaughlin and Michael Morell. At the time of the attacks, Hadley was serving as deputy national security adviser in the Bush White House. Harman was a Democratic member of Congress representing California. McLaughlin was deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Morell was also at the CIA and was President Bush's CIA briefer that very day.

This episode was recorded in front of a studio audience at NPR headquarters in Washington D.C. on September 9.

What is the GOP convention happening this week?

Wednesday was the third day of Ketanji Brown Jackson's Supreme Court confirmation hearings, but senators spent much of their time rehashing familiar lines of questioning. Republicans doubled down on charges Jackson is "soft on crime." And Jackson, like most nominees since Ruth Bader Ginsburg, did not comment on any potential issues that could come before the court. In an era of deep polarization, are the hearings just for show?
