Tax hell: How Andy Burnham’s £10bn black hole will hit your wallet

In today’s edition of The Daily T, Camilla Tominey and Jacob Rees-Mogg are joined by Tim McNally, the chairman of Piddington parish council, who explains why he is going for the “political jugular” by holding a symbolic referendum on the village leaving the UK.

He says the Government’s proposals to house more than 1,200 migrants in the Oxfordshire village has prompted residents to plan to take self-defence classes and install a CCTV and an emergency alert system. Plus, Jacob explains why he feels that some of the residents have brought this problem on themselves.

Elsewhere, Camilla sits down with Lucy Letby’s barrister, Mark McDonald, following the release of Lady Justice Thirlwall’s Inquiry report into the safety failings at the Countess of Chester Hospital. He argues the inquiry was flawed from the start because it refused to question Letby’s convictions, relied on prosecution narrative hypotheses, and denied Letby the opportunity to participate as a core witness.

Andy Burnham, why not bring in a rucksack tax too?

In today’s episode of The Royal T, Camilla Tominey and Hannah Furness speak to Dickie Arbiter, Queen Elizabeth II’s former press secretary, after Harry and Meghan’s return to the UK. Mr Arbiter takes issue with Prince Harry’s claim that Uganda pulled out of the Invictus Games after the King’s letter described them as “private citizens”, and claims the Sussexes are “blaming everybody for their ills”. They also discuss the Duke and Duchess’s recent return to the UK, and ask Mr Arbiter how Prince Harry and Prince William have handled their roles as royals differently over the years. Arbiter also shares his experiences handling press communications for the Palace, and recalls anecdotes involving royal figures such as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

They discuss the disturbing rise of unregulated suicide forums – where Law allegedly marketed toxic chemicals – and the alarming ease with which young people, including Imogen Nunn, a social media influencer, and 21-year-old Aimee Walton, were able to access fatal substances.

The families scrutinise the systemic failures that allowed Law to operate for years despite repeated warnings from coroners, and their fight to see him face justice in the UK.
