Leila Hormozi didn't believe she could make money. Not doubted. Flatly did not believe it.

Then at 21 she closed a $1,300 personal training package. Words out of her mouth, money in her hand. She thought: I never have to worry again.

That belief had to be re-earned at every level. $1,300, then $20,000, then $50,000. Each time she assumed she couldn't until she had.

Her rule, borrowed from Steven Hayes: act the opposite first. Don't wait to feel like the thing. Behave like it and work your way in.

Hormozi says confidence never comes before competence. Experience builds the skill, the skill builds the belief.

She bought a company two years back. Close to $10 million, lit on fire. She holds the majority, so walking away isn't an option.

Same decision-making formula bought another company that's crushing it. Bad outcome, good process. She keeps the process.

Cal Newport tracked down the development lead for the first iPhone. Nothing about the tech ever required you to look at it constantly.

Steve Jobs was a minimalist. A beautiful object you pulled out to play a song, call your mom, find an address.

Then the Facebook IPO hit and the apps needed revenue. They re-engineered everything around likes, retweets, photo auto tags.

Newport's word for it: social approval indicators. Now you check in line, in the bathroom, walking the dog.

Lewis Howes names the trap. The more likes you collect, the less worthy you feel, so you post again to prove you're enough.

Your social brain has no idea what to do with a number next to a thumbs up icon. It knows faces, time, someone who bothered to show up.

Friend has a baby? Congrats with three exclamation points costs you nothing, which is exactly the problem.

Dr. Kim Foster says you can decide to be a different person in a single moment. The part that takes time is convincing your own brain.

You look in the mirror and say “I'm very confident,” and your mind goes: “Interesting. Based on what?” That's why grandiose affirmations collapse.

Foster's fix is a bridge identity. Not “I'm a social butterfly,” but “I'm someone who can start a conversation even when I feel uncomfortable.” Believable, still a stretch.

Then you go gather proof. One awkward conversation a day, logged, noticed, counted as a promise kept.

The tell is what a bad day means to you. A runner who skips a rainy run just took a break. Someone without the identity says “see, that's never been me anyway.”

Same skipped run. Two completely different views of a relatively simple situation.

Lewis Howes was in his early 20s making a couple hundred bucks a week when he begged a guy earning multiple six figures to sit down with him at a Starbucks in Columbus, Ohio.

He asked for the secret to money. The guy asked him what he was most afraid of.

Public speaking. Lewis couldn't get through five people without stuttering and stumbling.

The guy told him that fear was the exact thing blocking his income, and handed him a challenge: one speech a week, every week, for a year.

He signed up at Toastmasters that same week. Two minutes or twenty, he showed up and spoke.

By the end of that year he was making $5,000 a speech. He hadn't made $5,000 in the six months before he started.

Karamo Brown grew up in an immigrant house where no A was ever good enough and “what are you doing with your life” was background noise. He went numb to disapproval.

What got in were the words. He was 6'2 by ninth grade with a full beard by tenth, so nobody came at him directly, but he dissected every comment people made about him.

Brown calls them cringe moments. Decades later, in the shower, a memory surfaces of the room where someone made a joke about people like him and he laughed along instead of speaking up.

His granny: you got two ears and one mouth, you’re supposed to be doing one of those double time. It made him a listener who absorbed everything, the good and the corrosive.

Hip hop made him feel invincible. Once nothing could touch him, other people’s words stopped deciding what he was worth.

Asked to rate his self love out of ten, he says nine and a half. He withholds the ten on purpose. There's always room for growth.

Michael Beckwith says you've never met a racist baby. It's taught, every time, by people still living inside the idea of the other.

Beckwith's frame: the infinite doesn't repeat itself or do do-overs. Different skin, language, culture are variations on a theme. All of it's music.

Imagine staying exactly as you are, forever, no growth. He calls that hell.

Religion means return to the source. It's a boat meant to carry you to the transcendent. Once you arrive, you honor the boat instead of clinging to it.

Which is why there's no such thing as a Christian mystic or a Buddhist mystic. Cross over and the labels fall away.

The test he gives: a fundamentalist believes two plus two is four. He has to convert you because deep down he's scared he's wrong.

Someone who actually knows walks out of that argument. “Peace and blessings. You do your math, and I'll do mine.”
