A client was once punished in Catholic school just for writing with their left hand. Patrick Teahan carries that story with him. It shows up in the therapy work he does now, helping adults reconnect with the version of themselves who felt neglected, abandoned, or not good enough.

He teaches something called dialoguing. You write with your dominant hand as the adult. Then you switch to your non-dominant hand and let your inner child answer. A lot of people write that second part in cursive, without even meaning to.

Patrick explains what happens to people who never do this work. They don't get angry so much as numb. They flinch from a kiss on the cheek. They joke their way out of closeness instead of leaning into it. And underneath that joke is a kid who learned a long time ago that tenderness wasn't safe.
