The child of Haitian-born parents, Fugees co-founder Pras Michél has always felt an affinity for the Caribbean nation and the long-suffering Haitian people. After a devastating earthquake hit Haiti in 2010 and the government seemed incapable of or uninterested in helping ease the people’s plight, Pras helped recruit hugely popular musician Michel Martelly, a.k.a. “Sweet Micky,” to run for president. Martelly’s successful campaign is documented in the new film “Sweet Micky For President” (http://www.sweetmickyforpresident.com) In this wide-ranging interview with The Young Turks’ Jayar Jackson, Pras talks about: - The role of protests in a democratic society - How the Arab Spring and other movements abroad may finally be coming to the United States - What was different about the University of Missouri football team’s protest - and why it succeeded - How the LA Clippers could have made more of an impact to protest against owner Donald Sterling’s racist comments - Whether health care should be a right or a privilege - The Obama legacy - Whether Donald Trump has a real shot at winning the presidency - Sweet Micky as a man of the people and whether fellow Fugee Wyclef Jean could have also won.
