If there's one thing 1980s movies taught us, it's that being a dad was complicated.

Some fathers offered wisdom and guidance. Others communicated almost entirely through yelling. Many seemed completely baffled by their own children. And yet somehow, despite all their flaws, a surprising number of them genuinely cared.

This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, we're bringing back a favorite episode from 2019 that's perfectly timed for Father's Day. Brad, Jen with One N and Steve revisit some of the most memorable movie dads of the decade and try to determine which ones got parenting right — and which ones definitely did not.

The discussion covers a wide range of father figures from across the 1980s movie landscape. Some are beloved characters who offered tough love and valuable life lessons. Others may have had good intentions but employed parenting techniques that would probably trigger several family interventions today.

Part of what makes these characters so interesting is how accurately many of them reflected the parenting styles of the era. The fathers of 1980s cinema often weren't particularly good at expressing their emotions. They weren't always comfortable discussing feelings. Sometimes they seemed incapable of having a normal conversation with their children.

And yet many of those relationships still resonate because they feel authentic.

Along the way, the gang shares personal memories, favorite scenes and plenty of laughs while examining how Hollywood portrayed fathers during the MTV era. Some of the characters have aged surprisingly well. Others feel very much like products of a different time.

The conversation also takes a more emotional turn as the hosts reflect on the ways these fictional fathers connected with their own lives and families. Beneath the jokes and movie references lies a thoughtful discussion about what it means to be a parent and how those relationships shape us.

Like many Stuck in the ’80s episodes, the result is equal parts nostalgia, humor and heartfelt reflection.

Because for every overbearing father, clueless dad or emotionally unavailable patriarch in an '80s movie, there was usually a deeper story about family, forgiveness and doing the best you can with the tools you've been given.

If you grew up watching 1980s movies, chances are some of these dads helped shape your understanding of fatherhood — for better or worse.
