For years, Stuck in the ’80s listeners have enjoyed "Close But No Cigar," our series dedicated to songs that climbed to No. 2 on the U.S. charts but never managed to capture the top spot.
But here's the thing: Britain has an even stranger, richer and sometimes more surprising chart history.
So naturally, it was time for a new series.
This week on the Stuck in the ’80s podcast, Steve and Brad debut Just Missed the Biscuit, a UK-focused spin on the beloved chart-history concept. The goal remains the same: celebrate great songs that nearly became No. 1 hits but ultimately fell just short.
The first episode takes listeners back to the years 1973 through 1975, a period that helped lay much of the musical foundation for what would eventually become the sound of the 1980s.
Along the way, the gang revisits music from David Bowie, whose influence on new wave, synth-pop and countless MTV-era artists remains impossible to overstate. The discussion also includes songs from Queen, a group that would soon become one of the biggest bands on the planet, along with selections from The Carpenters and other artists who left an indelible mark on popular music.
As always, the fun comes from the chart mysteries themselves. What kept these songs from reaching No. 1? Which records blocked their path? And looking back decades later, were the chart-toppers actually better than the songs they defeated?
One of the most fascinating aspects of the series is seeing how differently the UK and American charts evolved during the same period. Songs that dominated one country sometimes barely registered in the other, creating two very different versions of pop music history.
The episode also highlights how many future 1980s stars were already developing the sounds and styles that would eventually define the MTV generation. Even though these songs predate the decade we love most, their influence can be heard throughout the music that followed.
Like many Stuck in the ’80s music-history episodes, the conversation blends nostalgia, trivia and passionate debate while shining a spotlight on records that deserve a second look.
After all, sometimes the songs that finish second end up leaving the biggest legacy.
If you love chart history, forgotten gems and discovering alternate paths through pop music history, this episode belongs in your playlist.
