Jonah had lived in Gull’s Rest his entire life. He knew the shape of every street, the feel of the sea mist on his skin, the soft whine of the wind around the lighthouse. Once, he had dreamed of writing—of traveling the world, sipping coffee in foreign cities, sending back stories to be printed in journals with elegant names. But life, as it does, folded him inward.

He’d been a teacher, briefly. Then a husband. Then a son saying goodbye to a father who no longer remembered his name. When the marriage quietly ended and the house fell silent, Jonah took a job at the town’s old bookstore, The Winding Shelf. It was the kind of place where hours blurred, where sunlight slanted in just so, and the only sound was the soft turning of pages.
