St. Anthony was an Augustinian monk prior to becoming a Franciscan friar. He was a devoted student of scriptures and the first to teach theology to his fellow friars. Known as the Evangelical Doctor, St. Anthony was a gifted orator and preacher. He died in 1231 at the age of 36. His shrine is a center of pilgrimage, and he is the patron saint of harvest, the poor and Portugal. St. Anthony is also invoked for lost articles.
