LISTEN | Morning Prayer - January 17, 2025 |Memorial of St. Anthony, Abbot
Anthony was born into an affluent Catholic family and raised in a small village in southern Egypt along with his younger sister. His life took a dramatic turn when his parents passed away suddenly, leaving him with a significant inheritance and the responsibility of caring for his sister. One day, while attending Mass, Anthony heard the Gospel passage where Jesus instructed the rich young man to sell his possessions and give to the poor to achieve perfection (Matthew 19:21). These words struck a chord within Anthony, prompting him to selflessly give away most of his belongings, sell the rest, and retain only what was necessary for his and his sister's well-being. Although he didn't follow the command to sell everything, Anthony's actions reflected his deep commitment to living out Jesus' teachings in his own unique way.
