Hello and Welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads.

What lurks in the shadows of Ohio’s backroads, forgotten cemeteries, and hidden corners of history? Join us as we uncover the Buckeye State’s most chilling legends, mysterious sightings, and enduring folklore.

On a freezing Sunday night—January 2, 1791—along the icy banks of the Muskingum River in present-day Morgan County, a quiet settlement sat unfinished and unwarned. 

Deep in the woods north of Marietta, a small group of pioneer squatters had built an incomplete wooden blockhouse on the fertile floodplains known as "Big Bottom". They believed they were carving out a new future on the Ohio frontier. But they were on contested ground—territory the Indigenous Lenape and Wyandot nations were fiercely defending against relentless westward encroachment. 

As the settlers gathered around the fire for supper, the silence of the winter night was shattered. Within minutes, an attack carried out with sudden speed and ferocity left the blockhouse in flames. Twelve settlers were killed, several were taken captive into the wilderness, and a handful barely escaped into the frozen dark. 

Left behind in the ashes was a single, ominous artifact: a war club laid upon the ground—a formal, tragic declaration of war. 

The attack at Big Bottom didn't just shock the Ohio Company of Associates; it ignited four brutal years of bloodshed known as the Northwest Indian War, changing the course of American and Native history forever. 

Join us on this episode of Ohio Mysteries as we delve into the tensions, the forgotten survivors, and the ghost of a winter night that set the entire Ohio frontier ablaze.

Ohio Mysteries Backroads: The Garrettsville Train Robbery — Alvin Karpis Comes to Ohio

In the quiet countryside of Portage County, Ohio, the village of Garrettsville seems like an unlikely setting for one of America’s most notorious criminals.

But during the violent era of the Great Depression, the backroads of Ohio became part of the story of Alvin “Creepy” Karpis, one of the FBI’s most wanted gangsters and a key figure in the infamous Barker-Karpis gang.

In this episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads, we travel back to the days when armored trains, bank robbers, gangsters, and federal agents were locked in a nationwide battle.

Our story takes us to Garrettsville, Ohio, where a train robbery brought the national crime wave of the 1930s frighteningly close to home. We explore what happened, how Karpis and his associates operated, and why Ohio's rail lines and isolated rural communities could become attractive targets for Depression-era criminals.

We'll look at the world that produced Karpis—the desperate economic conditions, the rise of organized crime, the getaway routes, and the growing presence of J. Edgar Hoover's FBI. We'll also separate the documented history from the legends that have grown around the robbery over the decades.

Marblehead Lighthouse: The Guardian of Lake Erie

Perched on the rocky shores of Lake Erie, the Marblehead Lighthouse has stood watch over Ohio’s dangerous western basin for nearly two centuries. In this episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads, we travel to the Marblehead Peninsula to explore the history, legends, shipwrecks, keepers, and stories surrounding one of Ohio’s most recognizable landmarks.

Built in 1822, Marblehead Lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes. For generations, its beacon has guided ships safely around the rocky Marblehead Peninsula and toward the harbors of Lake Erie. But behind that familiar tower is a fascinating history filled with storms, treacherous waters, lighthouse keepers, and the ever-present danger of the lake.

We’ll look at why the lighthouse was built, what life was like for the keepers and their families, and how the technology of the light changed over the years. We’ll also explore some of the dramatic storms and maritime disasters that occurred in the waters surrounding Marblehead—and the stories of the men and women who kept the light burning when Lake Erie turned violent.

From the lonely life of a lighthouse keeper to the ships battling darkness, fog, ice, and massive waves, the Marblehead Lighthouse is more than a beautiful landmark. It is a reminder of the dangerous relationship between Ohio and the Great Lakes.

OM Backroads: Ep. 116: Lake Erie's Legendary Marblehead Lighthouse

Hello and Welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads.

In tonight's episode we talk with author Kelly Boyer Sagert about her award winning book entitled: "Wells Waite Miller and Me. An 8th OVI Civil War biography". Her fantastic book chronicles the life of the Civil War veteran Wells Waite Miller and his heroic efforts to help the Union win the war. 

On July 3, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg, twenty-one-year-old Captain Wells Waite Miller of the 8th Ohio Voluntary Infantry fought in the bloody heat of Pickett’s Charge as dying men fell all around him. Ultimately, though, his “bruised and undersized regiment” played a crucial role in the Union victory. Chosen to lead an outpost about one hundred yards away from the main Union line, against seemingly insurmountable odds, Miller and 150 courageous men faced down six thousand desperate Rebels. Fighting valiantly, they “broke an entire . . . brigade of the Army of Northern Virginia.”

Miller nearly died from his wounds, and this book reconstructs and celebrates the life of this forgotten Civil War hero—and the incredible synchronicities that exist between his life story and that of the author. The book also contains dozens of photos, most never published before, along with information directly from numerous descendants of Miller.

Miller lived a captivating life before, during, and after the Civil War: a student in Oberlin during a tumultuous time in history; courageous soldier; briefly, a teacher; a highly respected agriculturist; revered member of his community; dedicated, trusted politician; and a son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather.

In the first case to bring the fraternity tradition of hazing to national consciousness, 18-year-old Stuart Pierson is found decapitated next to train tracks where he was instructed to wait as part of his initiation ceremony at Kenyon College in 1905.
