I Literally Walked into What Would Become My Passion - Interview with Bob Kendrick

We had the great honor of talking with Bob Kendrick, President of the National Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, which, in his words, “is one of the nation’s most preeminent social justice civil rights institutions – it’s just seen through the lens of baseball.” We share a few of Bob’s stories in this episode, and the full interview will be released as a bonus episode later this week. We’ve got boyfriends from TEX and ARI this week. For TEX, Pottymouth picks the only guy to play for both teams in one game while Patti completes a set of brothers. Kinda Fun, Kinda Cute, or Cultural Appropriation?

The road trip season has pushed us back a day but here we are squeezing in a show between Chanukah and Christmas. Vocabulary lessons this week include Competitive Balance Tax, because the Luxury Tax isn’t just for Monopoly anymore, and Prospect Promotion Incentive (PPI). Just because it's the holidays it doesn’t mean you can slack on learning. Our boyfriends this week are from BAL, where Patti leans into the once and forever boyfriend and Pottymouth goes Westy, and the Hammers, where Pottymouth picks a player with a wacky Tennessee claim to fame and Patti goes right to ROY. The Police Blotter features the return of Wander Franco’s case to the courts, and the end of the Tyler Skagg’s courtroom drama. The International Baseball update includes almost baffling chaos around the Serie del Caribe and the Serie de las Americas but the takeaway is absolutely please stop blowing up Venezuelan boats. We’re both on yet more road trips and we wish you safe travels if you are too, and happy holidays if you celebrate. See you a day late again next week!

I Can Feel Everybody’s Dreams, Everybody’s Hopes

On this week’s show we crosstrain with the NBA, the PWHL, the WNBA, and cats. We tell you exactly what you need to win for a share of the pre-arbitration bonus pool and Pottymouth makes a case for a similar pay equity system for public servants. As both of your hosts are public servants, we support this idea. We cannot share the top secret formula, however, because, well, top secret. Our boyfriends this week are from the Twins and the Nats. Pottymouth was swayed by love at first sight, and Patti took inspiration from last week’s interview guest, Clara Rice. We bring you one of the Rodrigi, a wrestler with a boxer walk-up, a young man giving back and “doing something cool,” and a playable character offered a full ride in 8th grade. WBC Rosters are out and its already stubhub time if you want to see any games in PR. Venezuela is still the host of the Serie del Caribe, but lets all keep an eye on current events. MLB workshops its economic priorities for the next CBA with the Fan Council, the MLBPA eboard is all pitchers and former Patti BFs, which sounds right, and Dave Roberts makes some poor language choices.

Clara Rice “technically” played eight sports in high school and “also baseball” outside of school so how could she not be part of the WPBL’s first draft class? She’s been crosstraining her whole life for this. Don’t worry though, she’s down to just two sports in her junior year of college, and “also baseball.” We hope you enjoy listening to our interview with Clara even half as much as we enjoyed talking with her. Just don’t try to pin her down on a hometown, there’s too many of them. It’s also the first of our new season of boyfriends. It’s rare you can watch a dream come true in real time. We’ve been following Paloma Benach’s career as part of DC Girls Baseball, captaining her high school varsity team, and more along the way. And now we had the pleasure of speaking with her as a professional baseball player – making history in the inaugural draft of the Women’s Pro Baseball League. Give a listen as Paloma shares what it was like standing on the mound at Nat’s Park, what it took to get there, and what’s next. What the Air Feels Like, What the Ground Feels Like

And we thought they were only connected by wearing LAD caps. But no, Kiké Hernandez apologies to all of Puerto Rico from his hospital bed for having to miss the WBC due to shoulder surgery. Just last week his twin, Prince Harry, was apologizing to all of Canada. PCA and Corbs join Team USA and dear young Pete makes Mr. Judge feel his age. Welcome to little outlaw super athlete child, Josie James Swanson. Turns out our terrible predictions were only a little terrible – we aced Cy Young and the NL! The movement to keep LAD from visiting the White House gains traction, and the aerial tramway to the stadium loses some. The Trop is back and we want to know if the ceiling will still be “where the hell is the ball white.”

Baseball United is back, including Barry Larkin Field outside of Dubai, more home grown talent, and some questionable rule changes. The Police Blotter is all sports betting because it is really hitting a new level and we don’t miss the irony of the GMs meeting in a casino last week. Preliminary labor talks give Patti her second favorite quote of the week. We crosstrain with the fascist in chief’s visit to the Commanders vs Lions game last week and more happily with the PWHL’s Takeover Tour. Stay tuned – the WPBL’s draft is coming up!

Kiké and Harry, Separated at Birth?

Patti and the Pottymouth boldly predict the upcoming season’s award winners and champions. Our logic is as airtight as you would expect (Patti goes where the Matts go and Pottymouth follows her heart). The minor leagues are brazenly getting to second base more quickly, and taking all of our money with this year’s ¡Copa de Diversión! merch. We congratulate the Tigers for treating Tork right, the Cardinals for bringing back Tio Albert, and the O’s coming to an agreement with Trey Mancini. Our police blotter drags the litigation happy usual suspect as well as the universal DH. We’re watching for an expat Cuban team in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, and welcome the start of the season in the CPBL, KBO, and NBP. Heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of baseball icon Shirley Burkovich.
