Avengers: Endgame releases on 26 April and for Marvel fans, it’s the end of an era. The film marks the end of phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and brings to a close a saga that was spread over 11 years and 22 films.

Former Union Minister Arun Shourie, while responding to latest reports about the Centre waiving anti-corruption provisions in the Rafale deal, said that the uncovered facts expose “the lies of the PM and his minions, and of the captive media that has been broadcasting them. They put to shame the media, which, out of supposed neutrality has not been pursuing this investigation.”

Some weeks ago, I participated in an internationally-acclaimed conference attended by delegates from all over the world. The curator of the conference boasted that forty percent of the delegates were women. (I’m not sure what technicalities prevented full gender parity.) One of the side events was a panel on #MeToo, which I wanted to attend in part because I have been an active contributor to the #MeToo movement in academia and because the panel’s organisation intrigued me.

Gully Boy - Movie Reviews With RJ Stutee

Till last week it was the sniping war at the LoC which was live, with casualties on both the sides. Even as we were discussing the new Indian Army sniper rifles under induction, it was certain that a change in character of the proxy war in Kashmir would take place sooner than later. Pakistan’s deep state masterminding the actions of terrorists in the Valley had already experimented with targeting of local policemen and soldiers on leave.

For long, analysts were anticipating the return of one of the most effective weapons of sub-conventional conflicts: the improvised explosive device or the IED and its derivative, the car bomb. It returned in Pulwama with the addition of an even more potent weapon, the suicide bomber.

What Does the Return of IED Attacks in Kashmir Mean for the Army?

The media has given saturated coverage to the Pulwama terrorist attack. This is not unnatural because it was the deadliest single action against the security forces in almost three decades of Pakistani sponsored terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. 

But the way the media is running the terrorist action once again raises the question of how such grievous actions should be covered. Are there golden rules that should ideally be observed while reporting such events and in commentaries, including talk shows? And are these being observed in the constant flow of “Breaking News” on TV and updates in newspapers and digital news websites?

Covering Pulwama Attack: Has the Indian Media Acted Responsibly?

Taapsee has the tough task of playing someone who isn’t very expressive. Mithali keeps to herself, she speaks softly with her face registering very little of what she actually feels. It's her eyes that do most of the talking and Taapsee Pannu nails it brilliantly never slipping out of character.

But post interval, the film appears to have disowned its own characters, and for that matter, the audience. Why have voiceovers stating the obvious when you have an actor of the calibre of Taapsee who can convey so much with just a look?

This sudden shift in the narrative tone is both inexplicable and unforgivable and Shabaash Mithu is poorer for it. It’s a pity because Mithali’s inspiring story and Taapsee’s solid performance deserved better.
