Host Bakari Sellers knew he was against the death penalty–until white supremacist Dylann Roof killed 9 people at the African Methodist Episocpal Church in Charleston, South Carolina during a bible study. 
 
 
 
According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Black Americans are 7.5 times more likely to be wrongfully convicted of murder than whites. The Equal Justice Initiative has shown that for every 8 people executed on death row, 1 is exonerated. At times, maybe death is justice, but the administration of that justice is problematic, particularly in a racist justice system. 
 
 
 
Our hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari talk each other through complicated feelings around capital punishment.

This bellwether case will probably inspire similar redistricting moves in other Southern states. Our hosts take a look at how this affects the midterms and Black representation in Congress.

5. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has shelved the SAVE Act in favor of other legislation that has a better chance at passing. The bill would have disenfranchised 10s of millions of Americans of their right to vote. 
 
 
 
6. Tucker Carlson apologizes for “misleading people” about Donald Trump.
 
 
 
7. The Southern Poverty Law Center has been indicted over their alleged use of paid informants to infiltrate white supremecist, and other extremist groups. 
 
 
 
8. Virginia voters passed a redistricting measure on Tuesday, giving Democrats an advantage in the upcoming midterm election. 10 out of 11 available congressional seats are expected to go to Democrats.

Senate Leader Thune says the GOP is prepared to fill a SCOTUS vacancy if Justice Alito retires before the midterms. Baltimore has recorded its lowest homicide rate in about 50 years. There were 133 homicides in 2025, the next lowest year is 1965 with 131. Trump’s DOJ moves to toss out “seditious conspiracy” convictions for the role that members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers played in January 6th. According to research from HIT Strategies, 17% of Black men under 50 believe that Trump has made their lives better. Representative Ilhan Omar calls on the left to embrace MTG, Candace Owens, and other MAGA who have disowned Trump. 

 
Congressman Eric Swalwell has dropped out of the California governors race and resigned from Congress (under pressure from his Democratic colleagues) after multiple women accused him of sexual assault. Did they oust him too soon, should allegations be enough to kick someone out? It’s a tough conversation to have post-MeToo Movement, but necessary: how should we respond to credible allegations against politicians that haven’t yet been proven? Where do we draw the line?
