E216: Expanding Your Frame of Reference

You are not the limited thoughts, emotions, or sensory experiences you are aware of; you are the consciousness that is aware of them. Spiritual growth involves ceasing to focus that consciousness on the personal self, and welcoming life’s experiences as opportunities for growth. Through letting go at deeper and deeper levels, consciousness can turn away from distraction, become one-pointed, and ultimately follow awareness back to its source, where the limited sense of self gives way to the experience of divine oneness.

Every moment of existence is an extraordinary miracle, but you filter that miracle through the likes, dislikes, fears, and expectations developed through your past experiences. By resisting what you don’t like and clinging to what you do, you build a personal self that judges the present and struggles to make the outside world conform to your preferences. The spiritual path is to stop resisting reality, release what you have stored inside, and allow every experience to pass through you until consciousness is free to experience life with peace, openness, and equanimity.

God is not to be seen as merely a personal wish-fulfilling entity but the universal consciousness and creative force that exists as everything in creation, including ourselves. The mind is a field of infinite energy that generates thoughts like wavelets or ripples in a lake. These wavelets are transient and harmless unless we hold them in place by focusing undue attention on them. Held in place, these wavelets freeze and become the mental patterns of our ego and belief systems, which distort our perception from then on. Liberation comes from learning to relax and not resist energy as it passes through, and by letting go of the older patterns as they arise.
