In a major ruling today, the Supreme Court today suggested a complete overhaul of the way Election commissioners are appointed to the institution. The Supreme Court said that there has to be a collegium that sends the suggestion of the names to the president for approval just like in the case of CBI. It also had some harsh comments media. The Bench also went on to comment on independence of Election Commissioners, the rise of money power and criminalisation in politics, and more. The ruling comes at a time when several opposition parties have raised questions over fairness and integrity of the Election commission. More recently, after its ruling in favour of Eknath Shinde in the Maharashtra Political crisis case, the opposition had attacked the ECI and alleged bias.
