• S18:E18: The 5 Ingredients You Need to Write Subtext in FictionIf you've ever wondered how to write subtext without leaving readers confused—or explaining so much that the subtext disappears—these five principles can help. Subtext is everything a story communicates without saying it outright. It can deepen characters, relationships, dialogue, worldbuilding, and theme by allowing readers to recognize meaning beneath the visible surface of the story. But this is also what makes story subtext tricky. If writers don't provide enough context, readers have nothing from which to infer the deeper meaning. If writers explain too much, the subtext becomes text. In this episode, I break down five ingredients that can help writers create subtext deliberately: • How subtext arises between known points of context • Why the hidden meaning must actually exist in the writer's understanding • Why subtext loses its power when writers explain it • How contradiction between exterior behavior and interior truth creates depth • Why silence can sometimes communicate more than dialogue We'll look at examples and examine how stories invite audiences to connect the dots for themselves. • S18:E17: Character Misdirection: How to Write False Allies and False EnemiesCharacter misdirection does more than set up clever betrayals. By using False Allies and False Enemies, writers can deepen conflict, complicate character arcs, and create plot twists that feel both surprising and inevitable. In this video, I explore four variations of character misdirection: the False Ally, the False Enemy, the False Ally turned True Ally, and the False Enemy turned True Enemy. We'll examine how the gap between characters' apparent and actual allegiances can challenge protagonists' assumptions, develop the thematic conflict, and change the direction of the plot. We'll talk about: • How False Allies secretly work against protagonists • How False Enemies become unexpected sources of help or guidance • Why changing allegiances can create meaningful character arcs • How character misdirection adds conflict and complexity • How revelations about characters' loyalties can turn the plot • How to use False Allies and False Enemies to create suspense and effective plot twists Character misdirection works best when it grows from believable motives, conflicted loyalties, and the protagonist's own limited understanding. When these elements work together, the eventual revelation offers more than surprise: it changes how protagonists and readers understand the story. Others hide them from themselves. The most convincing downward transformations rarely begin with characters consciously deciding to become villains. They begin with self-deception as characters rationalizing their choices in order to take one seemingly defensible step after another until they have become someone they never intended to be. In this 70-minute class, I explore the Disillusionment, Fall, and Corruption Arcs as three distinct expressions of a larger negative-transformation pattern. We'll examine characters' changing relationships with the thematic Truth and Lie, the Disillusionment pivot, and the structural progression from the Hook through the Climax and Resolution. • S18:E16: The Impact Character: Why Every Character Arc Needs OneWhat is an Impact Character, and how can this supporting character help you show a believable character arc instead of simply telling readers your protagonist has changed? Character arcs are largely internal, which creates an obvious challenge for writers: how do you dramatize a changing worldview on the page? One of the most effective techniques is to use relationships. In a Positive Change Arc, the Impact Character represents or embodies something that challenges the Lie the Character Believes, giving the protagonist another person—and another worldview—to resist, admire, argue with, or eventually learn from. In this episode, I explore how Impact Characters catalyze change, how they differ from antagonists, and why they don'talways have to be mentors. We'll look at examples of antagonists, love interests, sidekicks, and other supporting characters who can fulfill this role, as well as the possibility of "negative" Impact Characters who reinforce the Lie rather than the thematic Truth. We'll also look at the relationship between Impact Characters and Flat Arcs. Although a positive Impact Character often functions similarly to a Flat Arc character by representing a comparatively expanded Truth, the role itself can be much smaller, shared among several characters, or even expressed symbolically. Ultimately, the Impact Character offers writers a practical way to make inner transformation visible. Instead of merely telling readers the protagonist's beliefs are changing, you can dramatize that change through the friction, influence, and relationships surrounding them. • S18:E15: 5 Ways to Identify Your Writing Weaknesses (and Become a Better Writer)How do you identify your writing weaknesses? And, even more importantly, how can you tell if something really is a weakness? In this episode, I share five ways writers can recognize recurring craft problems, strengthen weak areas, and distinguish poor execution from intentional writing style. Every story presents its own challenges. Struggling with one beginning doesn't necessarily mean you're bad at beginnings. But when the same problem keeps cropping up across multiple stories, that's information worth paying attention to. We'll look at how to identify writing weaknesses by listening to your story sense, noticing what you consistently avoid, comparing patterns across multiple stories, and learning from beta readers, critique partners, editors, and reader reviews. We'll also talk about the important difference between the inner critic's generalized judgments and the specific diagnostic nudges that can actually help you improve your writing. But identifying a recurring pattern raises another question: Is it actually a weakness? Writing craft is largely the study of patterns that work. But not every departure from those patterns is a mistake. Writers such as Kurt Vonnegut, William Faulkner, and Cormac McCarthy made unconventional choices that became part of their distinctive styles. The real question is whether your choices effectively communicate what you intend. Story functioned first as myth, meaning-making, entertainment, cultural memory, and a way of understanding ourselves and the world around us. But in today's marketplace-driven culture, storytelling exists almost entirely within commercial systems—something that inevitably shapes not just what we create, but how we relate to story itself. In this episode, I explore the tension between story as product and story as something deeper, older, and more archetypal. From publishing culture and content creation to commercial pressure and creative burnout, modern storytelling increasingly exists inside systems designed around visibility, productivity, and sales.
