Imagine that you come into a newly built home and it's your job to decorate it for the sale of the home. You have these beautifully painted blank walls. You have a wonderful open floor plan. You have all this great canvas to work on and you get to adorn this home, whatever way you want to. You have an unlimited budget. You can just do whatever you want. Now, some of you would have a lot of fun with that. And you would think of all these creative things you could do.

I bring up that illustration to put you in mind of the creative process… and to point out to you that when your child comes out of the womb, you have a blank slate. You have a blank canvas that you, as the parent are responsible to adorn with godly character and godly ways of thinking and godly perspectives on the world. They don’t know how to think, how to feel, or how to act. It’s your job to paint on that canvas with the things of God… and you do it through good communication.

002: What are you building and WHY?

ON THIS EPISODE

Think about your day, you make your plans. You're gonna go to work and at work, you'll be doing this and that. And you might need to go to the lunch with a friend during work, the wife might be thinking, I need to go to this store. I need to take the kids to school. So you plan out your day with the things that you need to do, and it involves your car, driving you all these different places. And very rarely are you thinking of the gas that is helping the car drive. But we all know that if we don't have our tank full of gas, we're not gonna be able to do what we plan for that day, whatever it is that we're gonna do, it's kind of the same thing with prayer. 

As a parent, you have these desires and these places you wanna go with your children in your teaching and prayer is like the gas in the car. If you have not, first of all, prayed through your desires of where you're wanting to take your children of what you're wanting to teach them. It's like you're out of gas and you're not gonna be able to get there. So we wanna talk to you today about how important prayer is. It has to be a part of your life. Just like you have to have gas in your car to be able to go to work. There's not an option. So we, we wanna encourage you with this important element of your life as a parent.

Hello again, parents, this is Mindi Green and I have a heart check episode today that I wanted to share with you. And I wanted to ask the question, who are you listening to for advice? As parents, I hear a lot from parents how they've read this article or they've heard this podcast or their friend told them some advice on their child. And sometimes I'm encouraged because it is good counsel that they received. But many times I'm saddened because it sounds like worldly counsel. And so I'm wanting to ask you as parents, who do you go to first when you need counsel? And my encouragement to you, my, my counsel to you today would be, God should always be your first source of wisdom and help. And as we've said in other episodes, our hearts need to be completely in 100% dependent on the Lord. And so are you going to him asking him for wisdom about the issues with your children, how to raise them, how to love them, how to teach them and train them.

HEART CHECK: Who are you listening to?

ON THIS EPISODE:

Recently, my 94-year old mother told me a story about how an old friend of hers dealt with her kids’ misbehavior. According to my Mom (who can tell a story, but seldom makes things up). this friend often got calls from the school that her kids were in the Principal’s office… but every time she did, according to the friend, “It’s their friends that keep getting them in trouble.”

Does that explanation sound believable to you? Or is the Mom thinking more highly of her kids’ behavior than she ought? Or is she making excuses for bad behavior for some reason?

We often hear parents excusing their child’s behavior — rudeness, shyness, disobedience, disrespect — all things that should be dealt with appropriately and swiftly. Why do parents do this and what’s the remedy? We’ll cover the issue on this episode.
