25 years after the 9/11 attacks, where does the trial stand?

The warning in former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon’s resignation announcement is stark. “The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade,” he writes. “No other human activity poses this level of danger.”

Coxon is urging Anthropic and other big artificial intelligence companies to slow their development of super intelligent agents. 

He says the current race dynamic could threaten human existence. 

Coxon talks with NPR's Scott Detrow about why he’s worried and what he hopes will change.

Are big AI companies gambling with our lives?

The Lindsay Clancy case ended in a mistrial last week.

Clancy was on trial for killing her three children in 2023.

Neither Clancy nor her attorneys deny that she killed her children – but they argued she was experiencing postpartum psychosis.

And while the jury couldn't reach a unanimous decision on a charge, the jurors now have to live with the facts of the case and the graphic evidence they witnessed.

The Smithsonian's leader is stepping down. Where does the Institution go from here?

As a new school year begins, how are students and parents feeling?

Christina Zielke went to an ER in Ohio bleeding profusely while experiencing a miscarriage. This was in early September, before the state's 6-week abortion ban was put on hold by a judge. What happened to her next is an example of how new state abortion laws can affect medical care in emergency situations.

Doctors who run afoul of these laws face the threat of felony charges, prison time and the loss of their medical license. 

NPR's Selena Simmons-Duffin reports that some doctors are asking themselves a tough question: when they are forced to choose between their ethical obligations to patients and the law, should they defy the law?

Selena's story about Zielke is part of NPR's series, Days & Weeks, documenting how new abortion laws are affecting people's lives.
