I'm Todd Woodson the creator of the Bring Back Soul Music website and podcast. I am a life long fan of soul/r&b music. I became frustrated not being able to find soul/r&b music on the radio. My only choice it seem like was left to listen to the music I already had on my phone. Where are all the great bands, groups and soulful singers from the past? A genre that has influence just about every type music is no longer relevant. Really? That's when I decided to start a movement to BRING BACK SOUL MUSIC. Join us every friday as we interview an up and coming artist, a music executive or any one who has a love for SOUL MUSIC.

Episode 0 - The Making of the Bring Back Soul Music

My guest is Marc Staggers. Marc is a talented singersongwriter from Washington DC. His vocal style often compared to famous singers from the past. He discusses his career in music and his new album "Let's Go Out Tonight".

Marc started singing in the church choir and studied voice as he was growing up. the development of his style is a result of a lifetime of musical influence
, including the late Luther Vandross. His album "Then and Now" topped the UK's "Sweet Rhythms Chart, " for three weeks at the #1 position. The album received critical acclaim from music critics from around the world. The album also made inroads in the U.S. radio market thanks in part to independent Smooth Jazz/R&B promoters "Gorov Music Marketing". Join us for the conversation.

Episode #2 - A Conversation with Marc Staggers

A conversation with BLAYZE. She's one of the most talented females to come out of the bay area in a long time. Her style consists of a variety of tastes and flavors that she can't be cast into a category of rap. She creates her own category that needs no title. 
She has a new album, "Definition of Hip Hop, is a classic Hip Hop. Blayze does not want to fit in any box, so that she has the freedom to bless the mic through a variety of genres whether it is Rap/Hip-Hop, Neo-Soul, Gospel, or rock for that matter. You will truly be delighted with the product from this artist who is steadily making new waves to become a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.

She has appeared as a feature on numerous local projects as well as her own solo project. Blayze has featured on projects such as "Hoodlum" by the artist "FAM" on One Way Out records, and also on the album "GHETTO SCRIPTURES" by the group "REALIZM".

Born and raised in Durham, NC better known as the “Bull City”, LVitto always had a passion for art and music. Artists like LL Cool J, Rakim, Biggie Smalls, Jay-Z, and others were his inspiration to make music. He started making mixtapes in high school and became known for his witty wordplay and punchlines. Studying moguls like P. Diddy, Russell Simmons, and Jay-Z, LVitto created his own entertainment company in 2015 called Family Bizness LLC.

His debut album,‘BLACK FRAME’, became critically acclaimed, attracting fans with a mixture of hard-hitting lyrics and jazzy tunes that embodied the ‘Golden Era’ of hip-hop. In June 2016, it reach over to South America and Africa which gave the project a shot at going international.

Mally Evans is a soul R&B singer born a raised in Durham, NC. Mally Evans discovered the love for music at a young age singing in a choir. It wasn’t until grade school when he started taking his gift serious and started writing/recording and performing. His music is inspired by the 90’s R&B era. “I love the feel R&B had when it was more authentic and sincere which is where I’m taking it back to. Saying certain things without really saying it and making a woman feel special about herself ” He says. He has a unique style that’s sets him in his on lane as well. The “Young Heart Throb” has a way of making the ladies melt once he sings in his smooth but yet powerful voice , with his clever, and lyrical wordplay delivery. His music is timeless mixing the old school and new school with exalted passion.

Episode # 5 – A conversation with Will Ready

Join me for a conversation with Cheryl Cooley, a original member of the band KLYMAXX. This band had the chart topping hits, Meeting in the Ladies room, The Men All Pause, I Miss You and Man Size Love. 

Cheryl started guitar lessons at the age of 11. She went onto learning music composition, orchestration & arranging at Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, then onto earning a degree in commercial music at Los Angeles City College.While her then-brother-in-law, Hubert Laws was on tour with Latin Artist, Mongo Santamaria, she accidentally tuned her toy guitar to play a television theme song. When her sister heard it she suggested to their mother that Cheryl should take guitar lessons. 

Cheryl talks about her start in the music business, her love of music, touring with a new group of ladies and her take on the music business today.

Join our conversation with Ty Juan. Ty Juan began singing at age 5. His parents quickly noticed his talent and love for music; so letting him participate in school plays and sing in the youth choir at church was a given.
Influenced by musical greats like Stevie Wonder, Lionel Ritchie & New Edition; as well as, John P. Kee, Canton Jones, J Moss and Dave Hollister; Ty Juan has taken his musical elements to another level and returned to his Soulful roots with his new Project “Automatic”. Ty Juan is credited for forming the R&B group Innterlude in Montgomery Alabama. A local success; however still not satisfied; he took Innterlude to California where they met Ken James of MCA/Universal Records. Mr. James, blown away by the musical & writing talented ability of Ty Juan; agreed to sign Innterlude to a contract.

Episode 8 - A Conversation With Ty Juan

As she developed her voice and craft over the years, she has set her sights on releasing an album that reflects her musical style—smooth and pop jazz, with a mix of bossa nova and Latin jazz, plus R&B. Heidi is no stranger to performing in international venues. After completing her bachelor’s degree from Manila at age 22, she immediately chased her dream, embarking on solo gigs throughout Asia. This path saw her performing in musical venues in Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Guam. Life was not always smooth sailing in Heidi’s earlier years of entertaining. As a single mother, singing provided her with the strength she needed to carry on; oftentimes performing as much as 5x a week, to provide for her daughter and set an example on the values of hard work and perseverance. This experience also intensified her resolve as an artist. Today, she is a proud mother to that same daughter, Hannah, who, as a scholar, graduated Summa cum Laude from the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School. What makes Heidi different? “My cultural heritage and my experience. Even when I sing these songs in my chosen genre, my FilAm roots are palpable in my delivery and the feel and tone of my songs. The sum total of my experience enables me to bring depth to the songs I perform”.

Episode #9 - A Conversation With Heidi Tann

Robbie Montgomery affectionately known as Ms. Robbie has had an extraordinary life. She is noted for being one of the original Ikettes in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue in the 1960’s. After her tenure as an Ikette, she was a member of the Mirettes, and then became a “Night Tripper” for Dr. John. In the 1970’s, Montgomery was a backing vocalist for acts such as Stevie Wonder, Barbra Streisand, the Rolling Stones, and Joe Cocker.

She later created the Sweetie Pie’s franchise, and starred in the award-winning reality series “Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s”, on the Oprah Winfrey Network. 

An icon of both soul food and soul music, Robbie has returned to her roots, performing and recording, with her latest release “Ain’t My Stuff Good Enough”. “I tell everyone that music is my first love and the kitchen is my second!”
