New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she’s a “staunch capitalist” opposed to higher taxes and would work to ensure New York remains attractive to businesses if democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is elected mayor of New York City. 

Businesses need to know “that the city of New York, as powerful and mighty as it is, is still a subdivision of the state, so any tax increase has to come across my desk first,” Hochul said Wednesday in an interview with Bloomberg TV.

Mamdani, a member of the state assembly, has said he’ll push for an increase in the state’s corporate tax rate and a new tax on millionaires to pay for an ambitious policy agenda including free bus service and universal childcare.

US job growth was far less robust in the year through March than previously reported, adding to mounting pressure on the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates.

The number of workers on payrolls will likely be revised down by a record 911,000, or 0.6%, according to the government’s preliminary benchmark revision out Tuesday. The final figures are due early next year.

Before the report, the government’s payrolls data indicated employers added nearly 1.8 million total jobs in the year through March on a non-seasonally adjusted basis, or an average of 149,000 per month. The revision showed average monthly job growth was roughly half that.

French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou lost a confidence motion in parliament, forcing a third change in government in just over a year and reviving uncertainty over how the country can tackle its mounting debt burden. 

Parties across the political spectrum in France’s lower house joined forces Monday to overwhelmingly issue the rebuke to Bayrou, who called the motion in a failed attempt to rally support for his unpopular budget reforms. Just 194 lawmakers voted in support of the prime minister and 364 voted against. 
 
President Emmanuel Macron will accept Bayrou’s resignation on Tuesday and name a new premier in the coming days, according to a statement from the president’s office. The new government will still have to find a way to pass a budget, an exercise that has now toppled the last two prime ministers.

Disappointing employment data released Friday validated fears that the US labor market may be on the brink of a downturn and lifted expectations for how much the Federal Reserve will lower interest rates this year.

Investors are now fully pricing in a quarter-point rate cut at the Fed’s Sept. 16-17 policy gathering. They also pushed closer to anticipating a total of three rate cuts this year, according to futures contracts. Some Fed watchers said the weak jobs data could spur officials to consider a larger-than-typical half-point this month, though inflation data due next week could temper those expectations.

President Xi Jinping used a mix of bonhomie and economic allure this week to send Donald Trump a clear message: Beijing has too much global clout to be dictated by the US.

Cameras captured the Chinese leader in a rare, unscripted huddle on Monday with Vladimir Putin and Narendra Modi — his most powerful partners in resisting America on the world stage — at a summit in the Chinese port city of Tianjin. At one point, Xi held the hand of his Indian counterpart, as the three men laughed casually, a striking scene given just months earlier New Delhi and Beijing were seen as rivals.

The images were a victory for Xi’s decade-long political project to build an alternative to the US-led world order. Hours after the trio gathered at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization event, Beijing signed a major gas pipeline deal with Moscow — rebuking Trump’s efforts to use tariffs to prise India and China away from Russian energy purchases.

China’s Xi Redraws Geopolitical Map

Most of President Donald Trump’s global tariffs were ruled illegal by a federal appeals court that found he exceeded his authority in imposing them, but the judges let the levies stay in place while the case is subject to further review.

The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Friday upheld an earlier ruling by the Court of International Trade that Trump wrongfully invoked an emergency law to issue the tariffs. But the appellate judges sent the case back to the lower court to determine if it applied to everyone affected by tariffs or just the parties involved in the case.

Friday’s 7-4 decision by the Federal Circuit could extend the suspense over whether Trump’s tariffs will ultimately stand. The case had been expected to next go to the Supreme Court for a final ruling. The administration could now turn to the justices, who have largely backed the president on other matters. But the White House could also let the Court of International Trade revisit the matter first.

“ALL TARIFFS ARE STILL IN EFFECT!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social shortly after the decision was issued.

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook’s lawyers suggested that an unintentional “clerical error” may have been behind the mortgage dispute over which President Donald Trump wants her fired. 
Cook sued Thursday to block Trump’s “illegal attempt,” saying he’s using a phony pretext that doesn’t amount to sufficient “cause” to remove her from the US central bank. In court papers, her lawyers laid out for the first time a potential defense to allegations that she fraudulently listed homes in Michigan and Georgia as a “primary residence” when she obtained mortgages in 2021.
