Fighting without a Shield: Ukraine's Plea for Defenses Against Russia

Once again, confusion reigns over the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump promised again this week that the vital shipping lane will open "very soon". The problem is that the US is not negotiating directly with Iran. Tehran is speaking to Oman, and says a deal on the Strait is close, but that agreement would not automatically reopen the Strait. They first want the US to meet certain guarantees. For more on this, Correspondent Jeremy Diamond joins the show from Tel Aviv.

Straight Talk on the Strait

After a tight race with moderate Haley Stevens, progressive Abdul el-Sayed is now officially the Michigan Democratic Senate primary winner. The contest has been an enormously expensive one, with the candidates' stances on Israel a central issue in the campaign. But while el-Sayed may well score a win for the progressives, it's a more mixed picture nationally. Political analyst Ron Brownstein joins us to discuss.

What el-Sayed's Michigan Primary Win Tells Us

The European Union held an emergency meeting today over Thursday's surge of migrants into Spanish territory. Some are also blaming Spain's liberal migration policies as a factor, while others accuse Moroccan authorities of facilitating the crisis. Journalism Under Attack

Ukraine reels from yet another night of deadly strikes from Russia that killed at least nine people, including children. Poland blames Moscow for firing a missile into its territory, creating a massive crater after it landed and exploded in a field. Two NATO fighter jets were activated and prepared to shoot it down. To discuss whether this changes the tide in the war, Ukrainian journalist Nataliya Gumenyuk joins the show.

Ukrainian Journalist Nataliya Gumenyek

The Trump administration recently revoked the Temporary Protected Status for hundreds of thousands of Haitians, removing their right to live and work in the United States. Haiti is plagued by violence and lawlessness with staggering levels of poverty, and Trump’s own State Department advises Americans must not visit Haiti. Retired Lieutenant General Russel Honoré is well known to many Americans for his leadership after of Hurricane Katrina, as well as managing international relief operations in the Caribbean. He's an expert on disaster preparedness and has advised Haitian organizations, and he joins from Baton Rouge.

With Their TPS Status Revoked, What Do US Haitians Do Now?

Two high-stakes meetings are scheduled at the White House today, as President Trump meets with Ukraine's President Zelensky and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, both in town for Senator Lindsey Graham's funeral. For the Israeli leader, the Washington reception today will be very different to the last. Rahm Emanuel, formerly a US ambassador to Japan, a White House chief of staff, and a congressman, has been a longtime supporter of Israel. He himself volunteered to serve in the IDF. But he now says the US should not provide its long-time ally with unconditional military aid, arguing they should be treated like any other country. Emanuel joins the program from Chicago.

Former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel

The US, already grappling with an affordability crisis made worse by the war in Iran, imposed fresh tariffs on imports from over 80 trade partner, risking higher inflation and more volatility for the global economy. According to the Yale Budget Lab, the revived tariffs would cost American households about $11, 000 dollars annually. Yale Budget L ab President Natasha Sarin joins the show to discuss this.
