Global Dialogues: Leaders at the UN Summit

At this week's UN General Assembly, President Trump threatened to “annihilate” Iran, and defended a worldview where, as he put it, “to the victor belong the spoils.” But behind the scenes in New York, diplomacy is also underway. Top US and Iranian officials have held their first talks since the June ceasefire unraveled, mediated by Qatar. And Doha is also at the center of efforts over Gaza, from the Board of Peace to questions over its past funding of Hamas. Christiane Amanpour spoke with Qatar's prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani in New York.

Qatar's Role In Peace Talks

Facing Putin's Threat

World leaders are gathering at the UN today. President Trump again threatened Iran, saying it faced a choice between making a deal to end the war or annihilation. There is one politician who is managing to maintain a working relationship with Trump, while also strongly disagreeing on policy - Zohran Mamdani, Democratic Socialist and first Muslim mayor of New York. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani

World leaders are gathering in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, and looming large is President Trump and his view of the international rules of the road. Brazil President Lula da Silva is joining other middle powers to push back against what they call the return of “spheres of influence and power politics.” He is also running for an unprecedented fourth term and faces a tight race against Flavio Bolsonaro, whose imprisoned father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, still has powerful allies in Trump’s Washington. Canada and the European Union announced the start of a new relationship, setting Ottawa on the path to become the EU's first "associate member." The unprecedented transatlantic move comes after the United States has targeted its neighbor and old ally, imposing big tariffs and threatening to make it a 51st state. SCOTUS Scuttles Trump Mail Ballot Restrictions

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a new phase of the war that has sparked fears of a full-blown war with Hezbollah, which the US has warned could be disastrous. Netanyahu also made comments that appeared to be a death knell for any Gaza peace deal which is backed by President Biden. One of Netanyahu’s fiercest critics is Ami Ayalon, the former head of the Israeli internal security agency Shin Bet. He speaks to Christiane about what hopes Israel could have of ending the war and returning all of the hostages.
