Global Dialogues: Leaders at the UN Summit

At this week's UN General Assembly, President Trump threatened to “annihilate” Iran, and defended a worldview where, as he put it, “to the victor belong the spoils.” But behind the scenes in New York, diplomacy is also underway. Top US and Iranian officials have held their first talks since the June ceasefire unraveled, mediated by Qatar. And Doha is also at the center of efforts over Gaza, from the Board of Peace to questions over its past funding of Hamas. Christiane Amanpour spoke with Qatar's prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani in New York.

Qatar's Role In Peace Talks

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani

World leaders are gathering in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, and looming large is President Trump and his view of the international rules of the road. Brazil President Lula da Silva is joining other middle powers to push back against what they call the return of “spheres of influence and power politics.” He is also running for an unprecedented fourth term and faces a tight race against Flavio Bolsonaro, whose imprisoned father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, still has powerful allies in Trump’s Washington. The unprecedented transatlantic move comes after the United States has targeted its neighbor and old ally, imposing big tariffs and threatening to make it a 51st state.
