Remembering 9/11

Britain, France and Canada have announced sweeping sanctions on trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The British Foreign Secretary accused Israeli settlers of "ethnic cleansing" against the Palestinians living there. Israel responded by ordering the closure of the British consulate in Jerusalem. The U.S. has yet to push back against the sanctions. The U.N. says settler violence has reached unprecedented levels and this summer, dozens of prominent figures in Israel signed a letter demanding action to 'eradicate Jewish terrorism' in the West Bank. Among them was former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. He joins the program from Tel Aviv.

Israeli Settlers Accused of 'Ethnic Cleansing'

25 years ago this week, America and the world changed forever. The 9/11 attacks shocked people everywhere, and prompted an outpouring of global sympathy, with NATO for the first and only time in its history invoking Article 5, that an attack on one is an attack on all. Today, America's standing appears very different. Nicholas Burns has held many senior positions within the US government, most recently as US Ambassador to China. On September 11 2001, he was America's Ambassador to NATO when Article 5 was first invoked.

Former US Ambassador to NATO Nicholas Burns

The funeral of war criminal Ratko Mladić shocked European officials and cast doubt over Serbia's bid for EU membership. Tens of thousands of mourners gathered to honor the "Butcher of Bosnia," as the former Serb commander was buried with military honors. EU President Ursula von der Leyen called images from the funeral "shocking," and EU Enlargement Chief Marta Kos canceled a planned visit to Serbia in protest. Kos joins the show from Brussels.

Embedded with the Lebanese Army

Arson attacks, air space violations and assassination squads: Those were among the warnings from Poland's Foreign Minister, Radek Sikorski, at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Ireland today. This comes just after Germany announced that it was in fact Moscow behind last month's attack in Leipzig Airport, where an explosive drone was found near two Ukrainian cargo planes. None of this surprises Czech Republic President Petr Pavel, who told us back in April that Putin likely would attempt increasingly bold campaigns against NATO. Pavel joins the show from Prague to discuss.

Czech President Petr Pavel on Russian Aggression

US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigned yesterday following months of clashes with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Much of that friction is understood to have stemmed from Hegseth's slashing of the army's most senior leaders. For many, Driscoll's departure is no surprise, but it leaves the military without another combat-tested leader at what some see as a time of maximum peril. CNN White House Correspondent Alayna Treene joins the show to discuss.

Leadership Vacuum at US Military?

From the very start of his war with Iran, Donald Trump never laid out a coherent exit strategy. The regional implications have been massive: a complete upheaval all over the Middle East with Gulf allies of the US dragged into a war they wanted no part in. Retired four-star General Stanley McChrystal led US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, and before that, as Special Forces Commander in Iraq he led the mission to kill Al-Qaeda leader Abu Musab Al-Zaraqawi. McChrystal joins Christiane from Washington.
