Biden challenges Taiwan 'strategic ambiguity' policy

President Joe Biden is on the last full day of his Asia trip, hoping to shore up America’s commitment to its allies after they were shaken by the last president. It’s a trip that all plays out against a backdrop of China’s growing dominance. But as so often happens on these international visits, it’s what Biden said when he wandered off script that garnered the most attention: at a press conference in Japan, he was asked whether the US would get involved militarily to defend Taiwan if China invaded, to which he answered, “Yes.” Top administration officials scrambled to reassure China that US policy hasn’t changed, but Biden has made similar comments in the past. So how can America maintain its traditional “strategic ambiguity” after such unambiguous remarks from the president?
