Canada and the European Union announced the start of a new relationship, setting Ottawa on the path to become the EU's first "associate member." The unprecedented transatlantic move comes after the United States has targeted its neighbor and old ally, imposing big tariffs and threatening to make it a 51st state. John Manley is Canada's former Deputy Prime Minister, Finance Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and he joins Christiane from Ottawa to discuss what the announcement actually means.

Remembering 9/11

Britain, France and Canada have announced sweeping sanctions on trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The British Foreign Secretary accused Israeli settlers of "ethnic cleansing" against the Palestinians living there. Israel responded by ordering the closure of the British consulate in Jerusalem. The U.S. has yet to push back against the sanctions. The U.N. says settler violence has reached unprecedented levels and this summer, dozens of prominent figures in Israel signed a letter demanding action to 'eradicate Jewish terrorism' in the West Bank. Among them was former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. He joins the program from Tel Aviv.

Israeli Settlers Accused of 'Ethnic Cleansing'

25 years ago this week, America and the world changed forever. The 9/11 attacks shocked people everywhere, and prompted an outpouring of global sympathy, with NATO for the first and only time in its history invoking Article 5, that an attack on one is an attack on all. Today, America's standing appears very different. Nicholas Burns has held many senior positions within the US government, most recently as US Ambassador to China. On September 11 2001, he was America's Ambassador to NATO when Article 5 was first invoked.

Former US Ambassador to NATO Nicholas Burns

Donald Trump's unprecedented power grab since regaining the presidency challenges the strength of democratic institutions to act as checks and balances. It's the kind of struggle that Norm Eisen and Kim Lane Scheppele have observed closely outside America. Eisen was US Ambassador to the Czech Republic and served as a counsel to the House Judiciary Committee, and Princeton professor Scheppele worked as a researcher at the Hungarian constitutional court. They join the show to discuss their recent New York Times opinion piece, "Are We Sleepwalking Into Autocracy?"
