This episode’s guest is Ashley Zumwalt-Forbes. Ashley is a born and raised Oklahoma native with a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Oklahoma, and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. 

Ashley is the co-founder and President of Black Mountain Metals, where her company is betting big on the raw materials that will supply the future growth in energy storage.

The Talk Energy Direct series is a way for me to connect directly with listeners in an unscripted way that is unformatted and therefore open ended on how I take it each episode. I’ll likely be doing recaps and behind the scenes commentary on the main episodes as well as talking about topical issues in the energy industry. More than anything I just wanted another way to connect with listeners and keep creating content.

#2: TE Direct: 01/11/21

This episode’s guest is Ryan Leachman, the Chief Operating Officer and co-founder of JAI Energy.

Ryan was born and raised in the Canadian oil fields and started his career as a petroleum engineer. 

After a well that his company drilled didn’t have access to a pipeline Ryan got his first experience with Bitcoin mining as a way to mitigate flared gas at the well site. 

After seeing Bitcoin mining first hand, Ryan and his partner saw an opportunity to go into Bitcoin mining full time with their start-up JAI Energy

This episode’s filled with discussions about what it’s like going from an oil & gas background and getting into Bitcoin mining. We talk about the challenges of mining the oil field and how mining using flared gas is a great use case but may face hurdles being a viable way to scale mining operations. Lastly, we talk about what it has been like bootstrapping a new mining venture and going full send into oilfield Bitcoin mining.
