'The Dew of Their Youth' is a novel written by S. R. Crockett. The story begins by introducing us to Duncan MacAlpine, the son of a schoolmaster. It was the hour before afternoon school and Duncan could hear his father's voice inside, lecturing the seniors about their Latin prose. A group of fifth graders were playing in the courtyard, and Duncan was supposed to be watching them. However, he was more interested in a group of tall girls who were walking under the trees at the head of their playground, a place where no boys were allowed except for Duncan, who was only allowed to be there officially. Duncan was especially interested in one girl, who wore a rough gray-green dress that barely reached her ankles. Duncan liked this girl because she was pretty and had once run along the roofs to ring the bell when the bell-rope broke. Her name was Gertrude Gower, but she was mostly called Gerty Greensleeves.
