Harry Wright is a creature of habit. He fixes springs, punches clocks, and expects tomorrow to follow today the way it always has. So when he wakes to discover that Tuesday has vanished and Wednesday is already under construction, he does what any sensible man would do—he goes to work and tries not to think about it.

That plan collapses fast. The streets are swarming with tireless little laborers aging buildings and denting fenders to make the world look lived-in. A tall supervisor calmly explains that days are not moments but sets, actors move through them on cue, and somewhere backstage the script is being followed with terrifying precision. Harry is not supposed to see any of this. He is certainly not supposed to wander into the control room.

What he finds there forces a harder question. If every scratch on a stair and every gust of wind has been prepared in advance, then how much of his life belongs to him? And if a mistake can send a man outside the play, what happens when he tries to walk back in?

Theodore Sturgeon brings sharp wit and unsettling imagination to this backstage vision of reality. The story blends humor with a creeping sense of scale, as an ordinary working man discovers he is part of something vast, organized, and impatient with improvisation. The wonder comes quickly, but so does the pressure to get back on cue.

Theodore Sturgeon was one of the most original voices in twentieth-century speculative fiction. His work appeared regularly in magazines such as Astounding Science Fiction and Unknown, where “Yesterday Was Monday” was first published. He went on to write the celebrated novel More Than Human, winner of the International Fantasy Award, and later contributed the iconic Star Trek episode “Amok Time.” Sturgeon’s stories are known for emotional intelligence and bold conceptual leaps, and this tale stands as one of his most inventive explorations of how fragile the ordinary world might be.
