World Disorder: How Western Illusions Led to Global Crisis

By the author of the international #1 bestseller If Russia Wins, a reckoning with the geopolitical chaos that is shaping the 21st century - and a vision for how Europe can shape the next world order. After the end of the Cold War, the West sought to reshape the globe in its own image: liberal, democratic and capitalist. Western governments, led by the United States, assumed that globalization would automatically lead to the spread of democracy; that the international order would become rules-based; and that democracy and stability could ultimately be exported through military interventions. As we now know, these assumptions were illusions that would breed chaos instead of order. In World Disorder, acclaimed political scientist Carlo Masala argues that the dream of a Westernised world has now come to an end - and the burgeoning disorder, centred around rising nationalism, mass migration and cyberterrorism, will shape international politics for decades to come. With Putin continuing to fight on in Ukraine and Trump embedding his vision for an America First politics in his second term, what challenges must Europe prepare for? And how can the continent change in order to prevail in this new disorder?
