Woman's Work in Music

Woman's Work in Music by Arthur Elson is a pioneering historical survey that documents and celebrates the contributions of women to the world of music from ancient times to the early 20th century. With scholarly rigor and a progressive spirit, Elson challenges the traditional male-dominated narratives of music history by bringing to light the achievements, struggles, and cultural significance of female musicians, composers, and patrons across various eras and regions. The book begins with an exploration of womens roles in ancient mythology and medieval religious music before moving into more personal and societal portrayals—such as the lives of composers wives, with a dedicated chapter on Clara and Robert Schumann, one of music history's most iconic artistic couples. Elson then charts the emergence of women musicians in national contexts: England, Germany, France, America, and other countries. This work highlights both famous and lesser-known figures, tracing their influence in composition, performance, education, and advocacy. Combining biographical sketches, social analysis, and musical insight, this volume is not just a historical document but a tribute to the persistent artistic voices of women who helped shape the music world, often against formidable cultural constraints.
