Why the Modes Work: The Fretboard View Method

Play two scales from the same frets. Hear the difference. Then see why.

Most books about modes give you seven scales and ask you to remember them. This one starts with your guitar: the same strings, the same frets, a different starting note, and a different sound. Then it shows you why.

How it works

Every chapter opens with something to play. The explanation comes after the sound, in as few words as will do. The pictures are on the neck first, and on the circle of fifths and the keyboard where they show the idea more clearly. You see why the seven notes of a major scale are seven neighbors on the circle, why every mode is the same band of notes with home in a different place, and why each step from one mode to the next changes exactly one note by one fret.

What is in it

• Twenty short chapters in five parts: hear it, why it works, each mode on the neck, anywhere on the neck, and use it. Every step is built on the one before it. • The ladder: all seven modes in a row from bright to dark, each one the one above it with a single note lowered by a fret. • The circle of fifths as an explanation, not a chart to memorize: it shows why the modes come in that order, and why Lydian and Locrian each lack a perfect fifth. • One note that gives each mode away, how to find it in a position on the neck, and the one major chord that holds it. • Three questions that name any mode, and answers to check your work.

For guitarists who know a few modes by name or by shape and want to know why they work, and for anyone who has tried to memorize them and found that it did not stick. Written for six-string guitar in standard tuning, E A D G B E.
