While You Were Sleeping: 31 Years of Anaesthesia – Myths, Truths and Stories

While you were sleeping is a journey into the mysterious and fantastic subject of anaesthesia through entertaining and marvellous stories that make the reader understand and appreciate the pivotal role of the anaesthetist. The stories in this book, with all their hilarity and tragedy, personal and medical, are compassionately related. Anaesthetic information is woven into the kaleidoscope of patients’ stories, enlightening the reader in uncomplicated English on the subject of anaesthesia and describing the wonderful people that the author has been privileged to know. Linda van der Westhuizen (1959) is still a practicing anaesthetist. She studied at the University of Cape Town and worked at the Groote Schuur Hospital. She then specialized in anaesthesia at Stellenbosch University and worked at the Tygerberg Hospital, after which she obtained a specialist anaesthesia degree from the Royal College of Medicine. She lives in Groot Brak River on the South Coast of South Africa.
