First published in 1856, *Wau-Bun: The Early Day in the Northwest* combines memoir, travel narrative, local history, and ethnographic observation to evoke the Great Lakes frontier during the 1830s, particularly the communities surrounding Chicago and Fort Winnebago. Drawing on personal experience and recollection, Mrs. Kinzie describes military posts, domestic life, settler networks, Native nations, and the tensions surrounding the Black Hawk War. Its polished, anecdotal prose alternates between intimate scenes and broad historical retrospection, giving the work both the accessibility of a literary narrative and the evidentiary interest of an early regional record. At the same time, its romanticized frontier perspective and assumptions about Indigenous peoples reveal the cultural politics of nineteenth-century American expansion. Juliette Augusta Magill Kinzie, published as Mrs. John H. Kinzie, possessed an unusually intimate vantage point on this formative period. Married to John H. Kinzie, a military officer and member of a prominent Chicago family, she lived amid the rapidly changing settlements and outposts of the Old Northwest. Her observations were shaped by family memory, firsthand encounters, and the conventions of women's domestic and travel writing, through which she transformed private experience into a public account of regional origins. The book is recommended to readers of American frontier history, Indigenous-settler studies, women's life writing, and Chicago's early history. It should be read both as a vivid primary source and critically, with attention to the silences and biases produced by colonial memory.
