A Rock. A Rod. And a God Who Stood Where the Judgment Would Fall.
Most Christians know the story. Moses strikes a rock, water comes out, Israel drinks. Simple miracle. Sunday school classic.
But when you slow down and read the Hebrew and Greek texts side by side, you discover something far more profound than a water miracle. You discover the Gospel, hiding in plain sight in the wilderness of Sinai.
In Exodus 17, God tells Moses something remarkable: "I will stand there before you on the rock." Then He tells Moses to bring the rod of judgment, the same staff that turned the Nile to blood, and strike that rock. God positions Himself at the very place where the blow will fall. The rod of wrath strikes the rock where God stands. And water, life itself, pours out for a dying nation.
Forty years later, the crisis repeats. But God changes the instructions. This time: don't strike the rock. Speak to it. The rock has already been struck once. That's enough.
Moses doesn't listen. He strikes it anyway. Twice. And for that act, God bars him from the Promised Land.
Why? Because the rock was never just a rock.
Inside this study, you'll discover:
Why God positioned Himself at the rock before telling Moses to strike it, and what that reveals about the cross
How the Hebrew text emphasizes God's promise to be there, while the Greek text reveals He was already there before Moses arrived
Why God changed the instructions from "strike" to "speak" forty years later, and why the difference matters theologically
The real reason Moses' punishment was so severe — and why it has everything to do with the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice
How the early church fathers (Justin Martyr, Origen, Augustine) read these passages as pictures of the crucifixion
The stunning moment when Moses finally enters the Promised Land — fifteen hundred years later, on the Mount of Transfiguration
Two miracles. Two textual traditions. One Gospel truth.
This is a concise introduction to the kind of comparative biblical study found throughout the "Two Witnesses, One Truth" series. If you've ever wondered what you might be missing by reading Scripture through only one textual tradition, this is the place to start.
No seminary degree required. Hebrew and Greek terms are explained in plain language. You'll come away seeing two familiar Old Testament stories in an entirely new light — and understanding why Paul wrote, "that Rock was Christ" (1 Corinthians 10:4).
In the "Two Witnesses, One Truth" series, author Kevin B. Potter offers extended biblical studies exploring how the Masoretic Text and Septuagint illuminate Scripture together. Begin with book 1 to just dip your toe in, grab The Septuagint: An Introductory Analysis for the full foundation, or start here with a brief, powerful glimpse of how comparative reading reveals Jesus even more clearly.
