Aiko came to the Icelandic underground facility for clean data and temporary distance from the expectations that followed her across oceans. Neither of them planned on the surface disappearing.

When alien predators breach Earth's crust to harvest its geothermal core, the facility seals itself and the temperature starts climbing. Something with too many eyes and a stinging tail is pressing closer to the outer walls, patient and methodical. Sealed doors and rationed oxygen buy time. Not much else.

Forced into the deepest chambers as the systems fail around them, the rising heat strips away every careful boundary Einar and Aiko built between themselves and other people. Proximity becomes necessity. Necessity becomes hunger. In the scorching dark they reach for each other with the same desperate intensity they use to stay alive, two people who chose isolation discovering what they actually want when the choice is no longer available.
