One of the last of the baby boomers, Dr Luke Gordon was born in the mining town of Boksburg, South Africa, to Catholic parents. He grew up the fourth of five children in a middle-class neighbourhood, raised in large part by his beloved nanny Sarah, who became a surrogate mother to him. His father was a teacher; his mother a typist who worked to help make ends meet. They were not wealthy, but they were determined — scraping and saving to ensure their children could earn university degrees and build better lives than their own. As a small boy, Luke was inspired by the family GP — a caring, kind Jewish doctor who still made house calls.
