Sweetspring is a quiet western town until an itinerant gang of robbers causes havoc. Wesley Vernon, a twenty-four year-old mine engineer, thinks he recognizes the robbers' leader as a childhood friend and determines to bring him to justice. Before he sets off he is devastated to learn that his intended bride, Maddy, has been promised to a wealthy banker from Boston.
