TRUST MODE – The Jet That Could Say No: The Day Maverick Turned Back

What happens when a fighter jet can say no? TRUST MODE – The Jet That Could Say No tells the true story of how Switzerland turned the F/A-18 Hornet into something far more than a standard combat aircraft. Behind the cockpit, speed and raw power lies another world: software, logic, national requirements and carefully defined limits. In this world, the aircraft does not simply obey. Under certain conditions, its systems can question, restrict or prevent what the pilot is trying to do. That changes the relationship between human and machine. Christoph P. Wyss explores the Swiss F/A-18 as a case study in modern technology, sovereignty and trust. How much authority should software have? What happens when military systems begin to encode rules, constraints and national priorities directly into their logic? And what does it mean for the pilot when the machine becomes more than a passive tool? Told in a cinematic, accessible style, TRUST MODE blends aviation, engineering and real-world technology with the tension of science fiction — except this story is real. This is not an MBA lecture, a technical manual or a dry military history. It is a story about the moment when code, judgement and human responsibility meet at hundreds of knots.
