Triads: Guitar Fretboard View

Every triad on every set of three strings, and how to move between them.

A triad is three notes: a root, a third and a fifth. On three neighboring strings it makes a small, clear chord that fits almost anywhere on the neck, which is why triads are the chords most guitarists comp with. This book shows you every one of them, then shows you how to move from one to the next.

What is in it

• Every triad: major, minor, diminished and augmented, in all twelve keys. • Every set of strings: each triad on strings 3-2-1, 4-3-2, 5-4-3 and 6-5-4. • Every inversion: root position, first inversion and second inversion, each named with a slash chord such as C/E, with the note under each string. • Comping: four progressions, the three-chord progression, the axis, the doo-wop and the ii–V–I, in every key and on every set of strings. Each chord is placed on the shape that moves your hand least from the one before. • What holds and what moves: a ladder under each progression shows which notes stay where they are and which move, and by how many frets.

Every shape was found by searching the fretboard and keeping only the ones a hand can hold. The diagrams show the chord's degrees in the dots rather than finger numbers, so you can see which note of the chord is where.

For guitarists who know their open chords and barre chords and want the smaller shapes that working players use, and for anyone learning to comp.
