Lucy Thompson's *To the American Indian* is at once memoir, cultural history, ethnographic testimony, and impassioned public address. Drawing on Yurok oral tradition and personal recollection, Thompson records social customs, kinship practices, spiritual beliefs, ceremonies, material culture, and the devastating pressures imposed by settler colonialism. Its literary style combines plainspoken autobiography with formal explanation, elegiac remembrance, and direct advocacy, producing a work that resists the detached conventions of nineteenth-century anthropology. The book belongs to the early twentieth-century tradition of Native-authored historical and autobiographical writing, yet its authority arises from lived communal knowledge rather than from an outsider's observation. Thompson, a Yurok woman from northern California, wrote from the position of a cultural interpreter confronting the erasure of Indigenous history. Her knowledge was shaped by elders, inherited oral narratives, and firsthand experience of a rapidly changing social world. By addressing "the American Indian" as well as the broader American public, she sought both to preserve Yurok traditions and to challenge racial stereotypes, official neglect, and the assumption that Native cultures were vanishing without intellectual or moral consequence. This important volume is recommended to readers of Native American studies, autobiography, oral history, anthropology, and American literary history. It rewards careful reading as a document of cultural continuity and political resistance, while also inviting reflection on who has been permitted to narrate Indigenous life. Thompson's voice remains compelling because it joins historical testimony to literary purpose: preservation becomes an act of sovereignty, and remembrance becomes an appeal for justice.
