Fifty years after signing the Declaration of Independence, John Adams reassured the nation from his deathbed, “Thomas Jefferson survives.” Unaware that Jefferson had died mere hours earlier, Adams was in a larger sense correct: Jefferson had been immortalized in the American imagination.
