Moore has done it again in this compelling third volume, Thirteen Miles North of Nelson, where both the simplicity and complexity of life in the far reaches of Michigan's Upper Peninsula push the reader beyond the rugged geography where extremes are more than metaphorical. In these eleven short stories, the reader is often brought to tears of triumph and waves of hilarious laughter as his characters plunge through the wilderness of emotions rarely exposed in conventional literature. This collection breaks many barriers that would frighten many novice writers. If Moore thinks it, he writes it. The word daunting doesn't seem to be a part of his vocabulary. These stories have been called parables with a purpose, although that purpose at times seems licentious. A good read for the adult mind.

"North of Nelson series should be read slowly, savoring the quirky characters, the poetry of the words, the odd, fierce stories. Hilton Everett Moore is far more than a regional writer. His words and stories place him in high literary circles indeed. So many of his phrases or sentences elicited a bit of envy, as in 'I wish I would have written that!' Beautifully illustrated throughout! A treat for the eyes, the mind, the imagination." -- Sue Harrison, author of The Midwife's Touch

"Hilton Everett Moore's writings provide an intimate glimpse into the lives of the North of Nelson series residents. They reveal the physical and emotional struggles of living in the rugged wilderness of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In the final short story, Moore's character states, Tonight I was witness to the undressing of a human soul... The author beautifully and lovingly exposes an individual's conflicts in searching for meaning in their lives. As with Volume I, North of Nelson III is a great read." Jean Treacy, MA in Reading, former instructor at Western Michigan University

"...I would recommend the North of Nelson series to anyone who appreciates the harsh and unforgiving landscape of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and how the land carves out the psyche of its denizens to the same degree that they try to conquer nature itself. The setting and landscape of Hilton Everett Moore's universe in these books will be instantly recognizable to anyone who has lived in or loved the region." -- Victor R. Volkman, Marquette Monthly
