Karl May's The Word of Honour begins with an unusual but determined expedition: Fritz Degenfeld, a spirited student nicknamed "Methusalem" because of his red nose, joins his friend Richard Stein on a journey to China. Their purpose is not mere adventure, but a personal and urgent mission—to locate Richard's missing uncle and recover a lost family fortune that has vanished into the vast uncertainties of a foreign land. From the moment they arrive, the journey turns into something far more complex than they expected. The unfamiliar environment of China presents not only physical challenges—crowded settlements, remote routes, and shifting landscapes—but also social and cultural puzzles where every encounter can change the direction of their search. Fritz, with his humorous and often unpredictable way of seeing the world, repeatedly lightens tense situations, while Richard remains focused and emotionally driven by loyalty to his family and the hope of restoring what has been lost. As they progress, they encounter a range of figures who shape the course of their mission: local intermediaries who alternate between helpful and suspicious, foreign travelers with unclear motives, and individuals whose knowledge of the missing uncle's fate seems to come at a price. Among these influences emerges a particularly important Chinese character whose "word of honour" becomes a binding oath that affects decisions far beyond a single agreement. This promise introduces a powerful moral tension into the narrative, as it obliges certain actions while also creating unexpected obligations and conflicts among all involved. The search for the uncle gradually becomes intertwined with a wider web of trust and deception, where alliances form quickly and dissolve just as fast. Fritz and Richard must rely not only on each other, but also on their judgment of strangers whose intentions are never fully clear. Without revealing the outcome, the story builds its excitement through a sequence of negotiations, pursuits, and narrow escapes, all shaped by the consequences of promises made in a world where honor can be both a guide and a trap.
